My Dog Was in a Car Accident With Me: What to Do Next
“My dog was in a car accident with me. What do I do now?” While we know that if their pet is injured the emotional impact is incalculable, but in Arizona the vet bills at least are compensable.
First, make sure you’re ok. You can’t help your dog if you’re seriously injured. If you can move your car, get it to the side of the road in a safer location.
Now check on your dog. If they’re seriously injured, get them to an emergency veterinarian right away.
If your dog doesn’t have any visible injuries, look for signs of “Vehicular Trauma”. What does that look like? The most common symptoms of vehicular trauma in a dog include:
- Limping
- Whining or yelping when touched or when walking
- Abnormal behavior
- Bruising
- Abdominal pain
- Bleeding from anywhere on the body
- Shock (pale skin, weak pulse, rapid breathing, cold extremities)
Paying Vet Bills When Your Dog Was In A Car Accident

A car accident can come with a lot of unexpected expenses. But vet bills don’t need to be one of them.
If your pet was in the car when you got into an accident, their vet bills will be covered in the Property Damage portion of your car insurance claim.
Depending on your vet, we can either get you reimbursed for out of pocket expenses or you may be able to treat on an accident lien. Reach out to us and we can see if we can assist with the treatment/bill pending the resolution of the property damage claim.
